Biography
Michael, ‘the Irish-Artist’, enjoyed a superb experience during his formative years at home and school, where Art and Design were very much encouraged. It seemed he was destined to pursue a career in the creative industries after a pivotal moment when he won an Art/Design Competition in Primary 5.
A competitive, driven person by nature, Michael had a glittering secondary school education too winning in athletic competition every year and doing well academically at the same time. He was therefore able to indulge his beloved ‘Art’ with relative freedom. Given great encouragement from his parents John Joe and Maggie and his ‘favourite’ Aunt Mary, who was the local GP, this was really fundamental in Michael’s chosen pathway. The encouragement of an inspirational Art and Design teacher too was pivotal in the young Michael’s development. The teacher was not only a skilful figurative artist himself; he was exceptionally good at explaining the theory of the history of art and design and the young Michael found this very interesting and informative leading to a life long passion in reading about diverse artists and designers from around the world.
A Degree Graduate from Queen’s University, Belfast, Michael majored in Fine Art and Design. There; after receiving outstanding technical and artistic training, Michael soon realised his true vocation. He started a career in teaching, becoming Head of Art and Design Secondary School.
A passion for portrait and landscape photography led to new creative outlets. He set up his own Studio Gallery and he competed in and won Local, National and International Awards for Wedding and Portrait Photography. Two first place International Awards at the WPPI, in America, a First place UK Award and becoming Northern Ireland’s First Craftsman in Wedding and Portrait Photography with the Guild of Photographers UK are two highlights in Michael’s creative journey to date.
Regular family holidays to Andalusia in Spain during this time and being immersed in Spanish culture have encouraged Michael to broaden his stylistic approach to his work.
